Saturday Rock Blogging: Reminiscing

by Calculated Risk on 12/06/2008 08:00:00 AM

Saturday Rock Blogging was a Tanta feature for most of 2007. Just once more for the memories ...

First some advice from Tanta:

Advice for all you UberNerds: if your PC is already acting squirrelly, and your dsl connection is slower than usual, it is not a good time to decide to download a giant MIRS dataset from the Federal Housing Finance Board, because three hours later after you've finally restored your system and rebooted in normal mode and retrieved the fragments of your damaged spreadsheet, you will have forgotten what the hell you needed that data for.
And in a post in August 2007, Tanta presented this gem from our very own central_scrutinizer: "Dead Cat On The Rise": (CR note: good call by central_scrutinizer!)

I see a dead cat a risin'
I see trouble on the way
I see copper thieves obligin'
I see more flat screens on Ebay

Don't go long tonight
Cause you'll grab a fallin' knife
there's a dead cat on the rise

I hear pension funds implodin'
I know the end is coming soon
I'll see my short funds overflowin'
Bloomberg proclaiming rage & ruin

Don't go long tonight
Cause you'll grab a fallin' knife
there's a dead cat on the rise ... oh yeah

Hope you got your cash together
Hope you are quite prepared to die
Kudlow will soon be tarred and feathered
One eye is taken for an eye

Don't go long tonight
Cause you'll grab a fallin' knife
There's a dead cat on the rise

And finally a search on YouTube for "Tanta" brought up this song in Brazilian Portuguese. Maybe a little too much, but who cares! (Tanta actually means Aunt in Danish)

Nada nesse mundo irá me fazer
Esquecer você

(Portuguese to English Translator here)

All my best to everyone, CR

Sunday Self-Congratulatory Rock Blogging

by Tanta on 12/09/2007 11:02:00 AM

CR adds: here is the link to Tanta's piece referenced in the Chronicle: The Plan: My Initial Reaction

Thanks to Bob Dobbs (and bacon dreamz) for this: we made it into a real newspaper!

From the San Francisco Chronicle, "Loan bailout is not likely to help many homeowners":

A fascinating though somewhat technical piece on the blog Calculated Risk surmises that this "convoluted and counterintuitive plan" was designed to stay "on the allowable side" of the contracts (called pooling and servicing agreements or PSAs) that govern how securitized loans are handled.
Dear media people: we appreciate being cited just like anyone else. That's what our media policy is about.

For the rest of you who've been hanging out at Calculated Risk before it was cool, a little celebration:

Music for the Weekend

by Calculated Risk on 11/10/2007 12:39:00 AM

Dow Is Down

Hat tip to lumpeninvestor who noted that this song was recorded in 2000, but the lyrics seem to fit today.

Enjoy!

I Love Subprime

by Calculated Risk on 11/03/2007 12:11:00 AM

A couple of ditties for you all ...

First up, a Country Western hit "I Love Subprime". (The singing starts about the 2nd chorus)

A one minute comedy piece featuring the Tan Man:

Music for the Market

by Calculated Risk on 11/01/2007 03:59:00 PM

Steely Dan "Black Friday"
"When Black Friday comes
I'll stand down by the door
And catch the grey men when they
Dive from the fourteenth floor
When Black Friday comes
I'll collect everything I'm owed
And before my friends find out
I'll be on the road"

This isn't the tune I had planned for today, but under the circumstances it will do.

Because Nehemiah was a bullfrog, but it croaked! Wake up from the AmeriDream! Help us celebrate the Death of the the DAP by liberating your inner 70s dork. Don't go telling me you read an economics and finance blog on Saturday morning but you're too cool for this number--I think I see a few of you in the audience shots.

I know, it's not Saturday yet, but CR's little caption contest below was just too tempting.

Saturday Rock Blogging

by Tanta on 9/15/2007 12:05:00 PM

Because I got up this morning and the first thing I fished out of my inbox involved a review of Easy Al Greenspan's new book, that's why.

If you can think of a better response to that, fire away in the comments. I'm just going to dance.

Saturday Rock Blogging

by Tanta on 9/08/2007 12:40:00 PM

Well, some of you know that Luciano Pavarotti died last week. And that yesterday our dryfly got us off on a meditation about rivers. I'm guessing some of you knew where that would go, inevitably.

In my own defense, there's an electric guitar in the following video, which makes it "rock" for all usual purposes.

Sure, go ahead, post links to your favorite grunge in the comments.

Pavarotti was never my favorite singer, especially in his later years. Yet he had an extraordinary voice, which is now gone. Rest in peace.
